The learning of any art or craft requires practice.  This simply makes sense. It is especially crucial in the Martial Arts where your artform requires vigorous physical activity. The Japanese call it 'Gyoji'. This can mean daily practice, but practice of an essential activity.  For Karate-ka, Kata can be an essential activity. Just do one kata a day....takes only 2 -3 minutes.  For an Aikido-ka, perhaps performing one swing of a bokken.  Just do something, no matter how small.

A little bit everyday is better than one day a week for 3 hours. Why? It builds strength deeply. A little bit every day of essential activity turns into a habit that will carry you into maturity in the Martial Arts.  You will be changing in deep and subtle ways beyond your understanding. Gyoji requires faith in the process, faith in your teacher, faith in your style and faith in yourself.

Overtime, when you think you're just going to do a two minute kata you get lost in time and are engaged in a full workout. The art will begin performing through you. You no longer are doing the art, but as Master Homann discussed on May 8th, 2010, you are the art.

All from Gyoji.

Hands palm to palm,

David Nelson...Zen Goshindo Karate
